Oratorical Contest Participants Address Optimism & Reality
A total of 10 middle school students from the Ocean View School District took to the podium in the 2019 Surf City Optimist Club & Ocean View School District Oratorical Contest. Students presented four- to five- minute speeches to a large audience on the theme, “Is there a fine line between optimism and reality?” Poised, confident, and representing each of OVSD’s four middle schools, students touched on a variety of subject matter.

“Each year, these middle school students impress me with their wisdom, introspection, and ability to convey a strong message of optimism,” said Dr. Carol Hansen, OVSD Superintendent and Surf City Optimist member.
After a tough deliberation, judges announced the top three winners. Skylar Smith, 8th grade (1st), Lindsay Harris, 7th grade (2nd), and Gil Lichtmaher, 6th grade (3rd). Both the first and second place students now prepare to compete in the regional Optimist Zone Competition, chaired by Dianne McQuaid. The Zone Competition will be held on April 1 at 6 p.m. in the OVSD Board Room.
Surf City Optimist President Bob Eastland, and Oratorical Chairs Bill Belknap and Gordon Briggs (photo left) attend the event each year, along with several other members of the community service organization, which partners with Ocean View on a variety of student-focused programs across the District.
This year’s outstanding participants are: Skylar Smith (8th grade), Casey Kingkeo-Bunmar (7th grade), and James Hooker (6th grade) – Marine View Middle School; Gracie Smith (6th grade), Lina Tran (7th grade), and Gil Lichtmaher (6th grade) – Mesa View Middle School; Lyndsay Harris (7th grade) and Lauren Dickinson (7th grade) – Spring View Middle School; and Taniya Khattra (8th grade), and Zachary Martinez (8th grade) – Vista View Middle School.
