2020 OVSD Teachers of the Year Announced
On a rainy, gray morning, Ocean View School District Board members and administrators delivered exciting news and colorful flower bouquets to two of the District’s schools. Vista View Middle School Teacher Jennifer Luu and Harbour View Elementary School Teacher Jenifer de Lachica were surprised to learn that they are Ocean View’s 2020 Teachers of the Year. Superintendent Dr. Carol Hansen announced each recipient at school staff meetings amidst cheers and applause. Today, it was announced that Ms. Luu will serve as the District’s nominee for the county-level Teacher of the Year program, which is coordinated by the Orange County Department of Education in the spring.

According to Dr. Hansen, the Board of Trustees will honor both Teachers of the Year at its regular meeting on April 9, 2019. “It is such an honor to recognize these outstanding educators,” said Dr. Hansen. “Both of these teachers are wonderful examples of how we can positively impact students’ lives, not only through strong academic programs, but by building developmental relationships with each student.”

For the past 14 years, Ms. Luu has worked at Vista View, teaching seventh grade math and various courses, such as Algebra Prep and Accelerated Math. She also serves as the Associated Student Body (ASB) Advisor, overseeing the Leadership class. Her colleagues describe her as setting the tone for school programs, school spirit, student interactions, and student-led community service, which she advocates with all of her students. Ms. Luu’s students help in the classroom and the front office, set up spirit events, create posters, and organize spirit days. They organize the school’s “No One Eats Alone” events. Preferring to keep the spotlight on others, Ms. Luu is said to be “the silent glue that holds Vista View together.”

Mrs. de Lachica started her teaching career in Ocean View in 2002 at Hope View Elementary School. She moved to Harbour View in 2009 and has been there ever since, teaching fourth and fifth grade classes. She is commended by her co-workers and Harbour View families for her stellar work, innovative teaching, and her love of the education profession. Her calm, soothing nature provides a support for students beyond her academic goals for them. Mrs. de Lachica’s colleagues describe her as always noticing when a student may be having a rough day and letting them know that she is there to help them. She comes from a family of teachers; her husband, Mr. Jared de Lachica, a teacher at Spring View Middle School, was selected as Ocean View’s Middle School Teacher of the Year just a few years ago.
Vista View Middle School is located at 16250 Hickory Street in Fountain Valley. Harbour View Elementary School is located at 4343 Pickwick Circle in Huntington Beach.
