OVSD Announces New Homegrown Circle View Principal, As Veteran Educator Promoted to Teaching & Learning Coordinator
With the new year comes new roles in the Ocean View School District (OVSD). As current Circle View Elementary School Principal Kristi Hickman transitions into her expanded role as OVSD’s Teaching and Learning Coordinator this month, current Spring View Middle School Assistant Principal Jessica Haag has been named the new Principal at Circle View, one of OVSD’s two 2018 California Distinguished Schools. The OVSD Board of Trustees approved both appointments during its regular Board meeting on January 8. Photo: Ms. Hickman and Ms. Haag.
“The Ocean View School District is so fortunate to have educational leaders like Ms. Hickman and Ms. Haag,” said Dr. Carol Hansen, Superintendent. “These women are not only innovative and knowledgeable in curriculum and best practices in the classroom, they are long-time community members and empathetic, caring individuals who keep students as their number one priority.”
Ms. Hickman, a school administrator in OVSD since 1995, will serve as a manager and coordinate a variety of key programs and services offered by OVSD directly impacting student learning, including English Learners, Early and Transitional Kindergarten programs, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), Foundational Skills, state and federal programs, and parent engagement.
“It’s difficult for me to leave my Circle View family and the school setting,” said Ms. Hickman, who has served as Circle View’s Principal since 2015. “At the same time, I have been granted the opportunity to take on an exciting, challenging new role in OVSD’s Educational Services Division, and I look forward to focusing my efforts on Districtwide programs that directly impact student learning and success, as well as family engagement."
Ms. Haag has a long affiliation with Circle View, OVSD’s elementary school GATE magnet. She first attended Circle View as a student and later began her educational career there as a GATE teacher in 2005. She moved to Mesa View, OVSD’s middle school GATE magnet, where she was selected as the District’s 2015 Middle School Teacher of the Year. Ms. Haag served in several leadership capacities, including the OVSD GATE Advisory Committee and GATE Criteria Committee, before being promoted to Assistant Principal at Mesa View for the 2015-2016 school year. This past fall, Ms. Haag was appointed Assistant Principal at Spring View Middle School, also in OVSD.
“I am incredibly proud and happy to serve the Ocean View School District and the students, families and staff of Circle View as their new principal,” said Ms. Haag. As a former student and GATE teacher at the Huntington Beach campus, she noted, “It’s exciting for me to return to a place that feels like home.”
Both women have worked with Ocean View School District administrators to inform their school families of the upcoming changes, and Ms. Haag is participating in a “Meet and Greet” reception at Circle View to introduce herself and get to know attending families and students.
