OVSD Teacher of the Year Celebrated, Marine View Performs
The Orange County 2019 Teachers of the Year Banquet was held on November 2, 2018, at the Disneyland Hotel. The Ocean View School District celebrated OVSD Teacher of the Year and Orange County Teacher of the Year Semifinalist Sandi Lewis, who teaches at Lake View Elementary STEAM School!
As if that were not enough to celebrate, our District also cheered as our own Marine View Jazz Ensemble performed at the big event as the first middle school group ever invited to perform at the teacher awards banquet. Help us congratulate both Sandi Lewis and the Marine View Jazz Ensemble!

From Marine View Principal Sara Schaible...
On Friday, November 2, the Marine View Jazz Ensemble had the distinct pleasure of being selected as this year’s entertainment for the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) Teacher of the Year Awards. This is an especially great honor as they are the first middle school to ever receive this prestigious invitation. Our students acted as musical ambassadors, performing for over 300 Teacher of the Year semifinalists, OVSD Board and administrators, friends, and family.
Marine View Jazz Ensemble students were scouted and selected after being recognized for their outstanding performance in a 2016 video highlighting the programs Orange County schools have to offer. OCDE was wowed by the group’s performance and knew they had to book Marine View Jazz Ensemble for the Teacher of the Year Awards Ceremony.
Excited for this opportunity, Marine View Jazz Ensemble students launched into rehearsal and preparation for this event. In a matter of weeks, students learned both choreography and five-part harmony for a lengthy medley, in addition to two requested pieces from the OCDE coordinators themselves.
In the weeks leading up to the performance, students attended rehearsals at the Disneyland Hotel, where they practiced with a live band and Orange County recording artist, Darryl F. Walker. Our students were thrilled at the new challenges and rewards gleaned from collaborating with live musicians.
On the night of the performance, Marine View Jazz Ensemble students not only provided top-notch entertainment, but also acted as escorts to the Teacher of the Year finalists as they received their awards. Eighth grade student Kimberly Alvarez had the pleasure of escorting the Ocean View semifinalst from Lake View, Teacher Sandi Lewis. A highlight of the evening occurred at the conclusion of the ceremony when teachers, students and the live band celebrated with a rendition of “On Top of the World” by Imagine Dragons.
Marine View Jazz Ensemble is grateful for the honor of performing at such a prestigious event and is thankful for the opportunity to express gratitude to the teachers who have so greatly influenced their academic careers.
