2017 Classified Employees of the Year Announced

Six classified staff members from the Ocean View School District, representing a combined total of 101 years of service to families in OVSD, received surprise visits this week as District administrators and staff arrived at their schools and work sites to announce their selection as OVSD’s 2017 Classified Employees of the Year. Cheers, balloons, flowers, and certificates were the overall theme of the day as each employee received the big news. Below are OVSD’s 2017 Classified Employees of the Year, with brief descriptions from their nominations.

Nutrition Services Winner Child Nutrition Category

Tannya Ghiotto, Central Kitchen at Westmont Elementary Years of Service in OVSD – 12 years

Ms. Ghiotto joined OVSD as a Substitute Food Distribution Worker in March 2004 and quickly became a permanent Food Distribution Worker in 2005. She also served as a Bilingual Instructional Assistant and was a substitute Child Care Attendant. In May 2007, the position of Delivery Worker was added to Ms. Ghiotto’s permanent assignment. In December 2014, she was promoted to Central Kitchen Coordinator. In a comment from Ms. Giotto’s nomination, a co-worker said that she has “a passion for serving students that shines through her work and is infectious to others.”




Maintenance Winner Maintenance, Operations and Facilities Category

Eric Taylor, Head Custodian at Golden View Elementary Years of Service in OVSD – 18 years

Mr. Taylor joined OVSD in September 1999 as a Custodian, soon becoming a Head Custodian Substitute in February 2000. By March of 2001, Mr. Taylor was promoted to Head Custodian. He now serves the staff, students and families at Golden View Elementary School. Some of the comments made as part of his nomination, included: “I know I speak for all teachers at Golden View when I say that Eric Taylor goes above and beyond the call of duty every single day.” Also, “Mr. Eric, as he is known by the students, takes great interest in knowing all the students at Golden View.” Another comment included, “He knows every student by name and he makes sure that they all feel special.”





Susan Burdette Winner Office and Technical Category

Susan Burdette, Administrative Secretary at OVSD Offices Years of Service in OVSD – 19 years

Ms. Burdette was hired in OVSD in January of 1998 as a Clerk Typist. The positions of Curriculum Materials/ Media Specialist, Library Instructional Materials Technician, and Instructional Resource Center Technician Substitute were added to her job in 2007 and 2008. Department Secretary Substitute and Intermediate Clerk Typist Substitute were also added in 2008. In January 2009, Ms. Burdette was promoted to Administrative Secretary. She is praised in her nomination materials as being “tireless in her efforts to assist everyone, and her strong job knowledge and work ethic is impressive.” In another comment, it is said that “her organization and expertise in running the complexities of the department are phenomenal.”


Hope View Winner
Para-Educator & Instructional Assistance Category

Clare Shweyk, School Library Specialist at Hope View Elementary Years of Service in OVSD – 11 years

Ms. Shweyk was hired in May of 2003 as a School Library Specialist Substitute. In 2005, she became the School Library Specialist at Hope View Elementary. In 2016, Ms. Shweyk took on a temporary role as a Library Instructional Materials Technician in order to help at the District Office. She has become part of Hope View’s PBIS program, giving incentives to students for positive behaviors. According to her nomination, she “learns the names of every student and remembers little bits of information” about them. Another comment said, “She ensures the library materials are ready for the students. She diligently checks out and in materials, and ensure that all materials are in good condition.”

Support Services and Security Category

Shelly Fernandez, School Health Technician at Village View Elementary Years of Service – 15 years

Ms. Fernandez joined OVSD in 2001 as a School Health Technician. She added the titles of Substitute Instructional Assistant for the Severely Disabled and Instructional Assistant in Special Education. In 2013, Clerk Typist Substitute was added to her assignment, and in 2016, the position of School Office Clerk Substitute was also added. She was selected as the School Office Manager for the Extended School Year program in 2016. Her work ethic is described as exemplary in her nomination packet. Also, “She has an infectious sense of humor and will always make you smile in the toughest situations.”

Transportation Category

Alicia Helm, Bus Driver in Transportation Department Years of Service in OVSD – 26 years

Ms. Helm began her career with OVSD in September 1984 as a Bus Driver Trainee. She became a Bus Driver Substitute in October 1984. By September 1985, she was hired as a permanent Bus Driver. She left OVSD for a short time and was rehired in 1990 to return as a permanent Bus Driver in February 1991. Ms. Helm has continued in her position since that time. OVSD’s Director of Transportation Gingi Borg refers to her as the “backbone” of the Transportation Department. In her nomination, someone said, “Alicia truly cares for her students and it shows in how she drives her bus, secures a student in a wheelchair, and toughs out a cold, so her students have the consistency of her smiling face every day.”
