Community leader Debbie Briscoe worked with the youth group leadership and Oak View Principal Jenna Landero to coordinate the give-away. Surplus backpacks are being donated to Westmont Elementary School.

The Marina and Edison KIWIN’S, a community service organization on both campuses, started the backpack project last school year as a way of giving back to the community. Then-Presidents Ashley Nguyen (Marina High School) and Johnny Kwok (Edison High School) wanted to pursue a joint project focused on children in the community. With their Boards’ support, the KIWIN’S clubs fundraised and assembled the backpacks and school supplies for local schoolchildren.

Principal Landero giving backpacks to students “We are so grateful for the ongoing support we receive from our community leaders,” said OVSD Superintendent Dr. Carol Hansen. “It’s especially inspiring to see these young leaders stepping up for our youngest students.”
