Transitional Kindergarten

Building Bright Beginnings: Transitional Kindergarten

What is Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is an exciting first step in your child’s educational journey! Designed as a bridge between preschool and kindergarten, TK offers a nurturing environment tailored to the unique developmental needs of our youngest learners. It provides children who turn four on or before September 1, 2026 with an extra year to develop foundational skills, confidence, and a love for learning before entering traditional kindergarten.

This year our Transitional Kindergarten Information Night is Thursday, January 22, 2026 at College View Elementary from 6:00-7:00 in the evening. The presentation will also be uploaded with a link here after the evening.

Why Choose Transitional Kindergarten?

  • Play-Based Learning: TK uses play as a key learning strategy, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and social-emotional growth.

  • Developmentally Appropriate Curriculum: Our TK program is aligned with the California Preschool Learning Foundations and seamlessly transitions into the Common Core State Standards, ensuring a strong academic start.

  • Social-Emotional Growth: Children in TK build essential interpersonal skills, helping them navigate relationships and classroom settings with confidence.

  • Experienced Educators: Our TK teachers are specially trained in early childhood development, creating a warm and engaging environment where every child can thrive.

Connecting the Preschool Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF)

The TK curriculum is carefully crafted to align with California’s Preschool/Transitional Kindergarten Learning Foundations (PTKLF). These guidelines ensure that children develop in key areas such as:

  • Social-Emotional Development: Building self-awareness and the ability to work with others.

  • Language and Literacy Development: Enhancing listening, speaking, and early writing skills.

  • Mathematics: Introducing foundational concepts like counting, measurement, and spatial relationships.

  • Science: Science and Engineering learning in early childhood involves inquiry-based, playful approaches.

  • Physical Development: Supporting motor skills, coordination, and healthy habits.

  • Health: Teaching what children should know about health and what health and safety habits they can develop through daily routines in a supportive learning environment.

  • History-Social Science: Building on children’s curiosity, helping them develop skills for social inquiry and understanding of their immediate and broader communities.

  • Visual and Performing Arts: Encouraging creative expression through art, music, and drama.

The PROCESS of Learning...
Transitional Kindergarten focuses in on the PROCESS of learning, which means helping students develop the skills required of effective learners.  These skills enable them to be successful in later grades and life.  The Transitional Kindergarten Program uses a developmentally-appropriate curriculum based on the California Preschool Learning Foundations.
