California Education Code Section 48980 requires that, at the beginning of the first semester or quarter of the regular school term, the Governing Board of each school district must notify parents/guardians of their rights and responsibilities under certain provisions of the Education Code. Other provisions of California and United States law also require notification of parents/guardians.

BULLYING DEFINITION:

Bullying” means any severe or pervasive physical or verbal act or conduct, including communications made in writing or by means of an electronic act, and including one or more acts committed by a pupil or group of pupils as defined in Section 48900.2, 48900.3, or 48900.4, directed toward one or more pupils that has or can be reasonably predicted to have the effect of one or more of the following:

(A) Placing a reasonable pupil or pupils in fear of harm to that pupil’s or those pupils’ person or property.
(B) Causing a reasonable pupil to experience a substantially detrimental effect on the pupil’s physical or mental health.
(C) Causing a reasonable pupil to experience substantial interference with the pupil’s academic performance.
(D) Causing a reasonable pupil to experience substantial interference with the pupil’s ability to participate in or benefit from the services, activities, or privileges provided by a school.

BULLYING EXAMPLES: (must be severe or pervasive)

•  Hitting, tripping, shoving, pinching, and excessive tickling
• Threats, name-calling, racial slurs, and insults
• Demanding money, property, or some service to be performed
• Stabbing, choking and burning
• Humiliating target(s) in front of friends
• Manipulating friends and relationships
• Sending hurtful or threatening email or notes
• Blackmailing or terrorizing
• Utilizing a website or social media to taunt, embarrass or degrade a target

INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM

What is Independent Study?
Independent Study is an alternative instructional program for students who are absent from school for even one school day as a way to maintain continuity of learning and recover absences.

How may parents get an Independent Study started?

Parents contact the school as soon as possible prior to the student’s absence to request principal approval for an Independent Study Agreement. When approved, the parents will be given an Independent Study Agreement to sign and work will be provided to the student. 

How long may my student be on an Independent Study?

An Independent Study is provided for students who will be absent 1-15 cumulative days. Any absences after completing the maximum of 15 cumulative days of Independent Study do not qualify for an Independent Study.

How will my student receive the work to complete an Independent Study?

The work will be provided by the classroom teacher(s) either through google classroom or through individual work sent home to complete. Students should complete the work as soon as possible after returning from the absence. 

How does my student receive credit for an Independent Study?

When the completed work is completed, the teacher(s) will review the work to determine if the work is completed satisfactorily and receive credit to recover absences.

Board Policy No. 5145.7, SEXUAL HARASSMENT  The Board of Trustees is committed to maintaining an educational environment that is free from harassment and discrimination.  The Board of Trustees prohibits sexual harassment of students by other students, employees, or other persons, at school or at school-sponsored or school-related activities.  The Board of Trustees also prohibits retaliatory behavior or action against persons who complain, testify, assist, or otherwise participate in District complaint processes.

Records Request

Parents/guardians can request to receive a copy of or to view their child's educational records by contacting the school or District directly.  Parents/guardians are encouraged to provide a written letter (or email) to the school principal, special education director, or to the OVSD Student Services Department to request to receive a copy of or to view their child's educational records.  Per California Education Code 49068-49069, record requests will be fulfilled within 5 business days from the date of receipt of the request.

In accordance with OVSD Board Policy and Administrative Regulation 5215: Student Records, Student Records are limited to items of information  (gathered within or outside the District) that are directly related to an identifiable student and that are maintained by the District.  

Changes to Student Records

Only a parent/guardian having legal custody of a student may challenge the content of a record or offer a written response to a record.  (Education Code 49061)

No addition or change shall be made to a student's record after high school graduation or permanent departure, other than routine updating, unless required by law or with prior consent of the parent/guardian or adult student.  (Education Code 49070; 5 CCR 437)

Any request to change a student's legal name in the student's mandatory permanent student record shall be accompanied with appropriate documentation.

Any challenge to the content of a student's record shall be filed in accordance with Education Code 49070 and the process specified in Administrative Regulation 5125.3 - Challenging Student Records.

Ocean View School District staff recognize the link between student health and learning and desire to provide all students with the environment and skills that lead to mental wellness.

The OVSD Virtual Wellness Room provides all students with helpful tips and activities such as mindfulness and yoga to promote health and wellness. Students are encouraged to visit the Virtual Wellness Room to learn and practice healthy activities.

Each of OVSD's three middle schools has a separate Well Space on campus where students may go to relax, relieve stress and practice healthy coping strategies in a biophilic designed room.

All schools in the Ocean View School District offer rigorous, research-based instructional programs, which are designed to meet the needs of their students. Each year, OVSD gives parents the opportunity to transfer to schools within or into the District to meet families' unique needs. These transfers are approved based on space availability and site capacity.
