Dear Ocean View School District Families, Staff and Community Members,

Today, students from across the United States stood together in solidarity to focus attention on school safety. In the Ocean View School District, our District leaders, school staffs and students prepared for the nationwide school walkout event by communicating with each other and with our families. We monitored any discussions about potential student-led activities, and we collaborated with our local law enforcement and neighboring school districts about any possible events.

Student gathering March 14, 2018 I want to tell you how incredibly proud I am of our students, particularly our middle school students. They approached the national walkout by showing tremendous empathy and maturity. Our students acknowledged the tragic loss of life in Parkland, Florida, and across our nation’s campuses with respect and solemnity. For the Ocean View School District, these expressions did not disrupt our classroom instructional time and often fell during regularly scheduled nutrition breaks.

Thank you to all of our staff, families, students, and community leaders for working in partnership with us, for being patient as we face these new challenges, and for keeping the lines of communication open. We truly rely on one another as we strive to teach our children not just their academic lessons but how to become responsible, civic-minded members of society. Today reinforced for me that we are on the right path. Keep up the good work, OVSD! We are so proud of our students!

    Sincerely,

    Carol Hansen, Ed.D.
    Superintendent
