Enrolling Your Child in Transitional Kindergarten

  • TK uses a modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate. Upon request of a child’s parents/guardians, the District may, on a case-by-case basis, determine it is in the child’s best interest to admit into Ocean View’s TK program a child whose fifth birthday is on or before September 1 and who is eligible for entrance into a traditional Kindergarten program. (Please see Option 2.)

    • Option 1: State legislation provides an opportunity for students whose fifth birthday falls between September 2 and December 2, 2020, to participate in the Ocean View Transitional Kindergarten program. A child whose birthday is in this window will be automatically placed in TK.

    • Option 2: A parent whose child’s birthday is on or before September 1, 2020, may request their child be placed in the TK program. The child will be assessed by a certificated teacher at the District Office. The assessment asks children to draw, build with blocks, and do other tasks to assess the readiness of young children for program placement. Based on the results of the assessment, past school experience, individual student needs, and parent and teacher input, a recommendation will be made to enter the child into either a traditional Kindergarten or a TK program.
