September 1, 2020
Dear OVSD Parents,
Last week we informed you that we would be starting the school year on September 9 with Distance Learning and our Virtual Academy.
We had hoped that the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and the Orange County Health Care Agency (OCHCA) would allow schools to open for in-person instruction after Labor Day and that we would start our Hybrid schedule on September 14th. However, on Aug. 28, Governor Gavin Newsom announced a new four-tiered system to track COVID-19 progress by county. The OCHCA initially told us that as long as Orange County COVID-19 numbers continued to trend downward, schools would still be allowed to open for in-person instruction after Labor Day. Today, we learned that the CDPH has reviewed Orange County’s COVID-19 data and determined that schools will not be allowed to open for in-person instruction until Tuesday, September 22nd, at the earliest.
What does this mean for Ocean View School District?
We will begin school on September 9 with Distance Learning and our Virtual Academy and then we will plan to begin our Hybrid schedule on September 28th, if the CDPH and OCHCA grants schools approval to open for in-person instruction. If this date is extended, you will be informed accordingly.
Later this week, we will be sending a parent communication detailing the daily Distance Learning schedule that students will be using beginning September 9.
We share your frustration with the constantly changing information and the moving of the goal posts at the state and county level. However, we remain focused on providing our students with the best education possible and we continue to hone our safety plans and protocols in preparation of our students’ return.
Thank you for your patience, understanding, and flexibility as we continue to navigate this fluid situation.
Dr. Carol Hansen, Superintendent
Gina Clayton-Tarvin, President, Board of Trustees
