Vision
In the
Ocean View School District, technology is an integral part of the
teaching and learning process. Technology is a tool to enhance the
delivery of curricula, increase teacher and student productivity
and efficiency, promote creative expression, increase communication
and access to information. The infusion of appropriate technologies
into the instructional program will help ensure that students are
prepared to be skillful and productive users of information in the
future.
Mission
Our
mission is to ensure the use of appropriate technologies in the
Ocean View School District to enhance the delivery of curricula,
meet the academic needs of a diverse student population, and
promote optimal growth and learning. In a rapidly changing
environment, students are required to access and process increasing
amounts of information and to develop appropriate technological
skills. Students and teachers will access and present information
using technological resources for critical thinking and problem
solving.
Philosophy
We live
in an increasingly complex and technologically oriented word. As a
result, our staff must have training, support, and the materials
necessary to prepare students for success in this changing
environment. Technology holds great potential for education. It can
transform classroom practices by addressing the complex demands on
teachers and the individual needs of students to be prepared for a
world that includes instantaneous, global communication of vast
amounts of information and the demand for a technologically
sophisticated work force.
All teachers must be provided an opportunity for training in the
responsible use of technology in the classroom and for
instructional management. Students must be shown how technology can
provide important tools for problem solving and communicating as
outlined in the California Curriculum Frameworks.
Technology encompasses tools that encourage students to think creatively, communicate effectively, solve problems wisely, and manage information skillfully. Technology in this context includes computers, telephones, data and video systems designed and networked when feasible, to enhance communication and instruction. Our vision is to transform the use of technology from its current supplementary and peripheral role to an integrated role that supports appropriate teaching strategies and makes instruction more relevant to students at all levels. In order to accomplish this goal, the Ocean View School District has made technology a priority. District goals are to maintain 6:1 student/computer ratio so students have ample access to the use of technology in the classroom. Every 3rd – 8th grade student in the district will have equal access to the use of technology as a tool.
As Educators, we must acknowledge our responsibility to prepare students to live and work in an information age. We can no longer teach today’s students based solely on our own history – we must begin preparing them for their future.
Ocean View School District has incorporated the key elements of exemplary technology staff development into the district staff development plan. Ocean View teachers on special assignment are the primary trainers of teachers, and are available for follow-up after lessons or workshops. All teachers of 3rd-8th grades receive technology staff development and are trained on their own classroom computers. The staff development opportunities are integrated into the school day on a regular basis. Technology training is project-based and tied to classroom and curriculum objectives. An outcome of enhancing learning with the use of technology as a tool will be a change in instructional style. Teachers will begin to facilitate learning rather than impart knowledge, and students will learn skills needed to become life-long learners.
Information
Literacy
The learning
community of Ocean View School District is committed to ensuring
that all students shall command and comprehend knowledge across the
disciplines as well as develop productive habits of mind, person
and citizenship. Among other things, persons who command and
comprehend formal knowledge across disciplines:
* Speak and
write with influence and creativity
* Use scientific method to observe, record, and interpret the
physical world
* Know how to access and manage information
Persons who demonstrate productive habits of mind:
* Seek
ethical and logical solutions to complex problems
* Find and consider information from many sources
* Ask questions
* Seek answers
* Consider all options
Persons who demonstrate productive personal habits are able to:
* Work
independently
* Work cooperatively
* Meet challenges with persistence, self-discipline, and
confidence
* Practice creativity
In order to achieve these broad results district-wide, many student needs will be addressed. Technology will be particularly effective in dealing with these four major student needs:
Ocean View School District students need:
1. to be
able to learn in their own unique style
2. to develop skills in transitioning from concrete to abstract
thinking
3. to access information and resources
4. to evaluate and effectively use, and communicate information in
its various formats
Technology
Standards for K-8 Students
The Ocean View
School District Technology Standards were developed as an outgrowth
of the implementation of the Ocean View School District Technology
Plan. As elementary students and teachers increased the use of
technology in their classrooms a need for a sequential list of
technology skills by grade level developed. Collaboration with all
district third and fourth grade teachers on an Integrated
Technology Planning Day (1996) resulted in a listing of appropriate
skills and projects based on student grade level abilities. Over a
two year period, teachers continued to refine grade level projects
and skills, in addition research commenced in the reviewing of
national, state, county and school district technology standards
and how these related to the Ocean View School District Technology
Plan. As technology changes and additional grade level use is
increased these standards will continue to be reviewed and revised
on a regular basis.
Keeping with high student expectations the National Educational Technology Standards for Students were adapted to be the basis for Ocean View School District Technology Standards for students. These standards provide students with life long skills for the use of technology in learning and the workplace.
These standards cover a wide range of technology goals and objectives. The six broad technology goals include:
Goal One:
BASIC OPERATIONS AND CONCEPTS
Students understand the
nature and operation of technology systems and are proficient in
their use.
Goal Two:
SOCIAL, ETHICAL AND HUMAN ISSUES
Students understand
ethical and social issues, practice responsible use and develop
positive attitudes toward technology and lifelong learning.
Goal
Three: TECHNOLOGY PRODUCTIVITY TOOLS
Students use technology
tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote
creativity.
Goal Four:
TECHNOLOGY COMMUNICATION TOOLS
Students use
telecommunications and a variety of media and formats to
communicate information effectively to multiple audiences.
Goal Five:
TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH TOOLS
Students use technology to
collect and evaluate information, process data, and select
resources based on appropriateness to tasks.
Goal Six:
TECHNOLOGY PROBLEM-SOLVING AND DECISION-MAKING TOOLS
Students use technology
resources for developing strategies for solving problems in the
real world.
