Curriculum Development

The Instructional Advisory Council (IAC), under the leadership of Beverly Hempstead, Deputy Superintendent, is the vehicle for the development of a structured program for curriculum review, improvement, and implementation in the Ocean View School District. The organization and structure of the IAC makes maximum utilization of available resources, capitalizes on what has been learned from District experience and curriculum improvement efforts, and makes curriculum reform manageable over time.

The IAC provides a forum for curriculum and instruction, student support services, community members, and selected school site representatives to review, refine, and evaluate a wide variety of instructional programs and activities. By synchronizing curriculum improvement activities with the State frameworks, State Content Standards, and eight year textbook adoption cycle, specific technical assistance and other resources are focused on the curricular areas under review and used in a more organized and predictive manner.

Committee membership provides a wide range of experiences for administrators, future administrators, classroom teachers, support personnel, and community members. Schools are part of the networking to the IAC which promotes articulation across the District for curriculum review, implementation, and improvement.

The Instructional Advisory Council provides the leadership and support needed to help the District plan and implement improvement strategies. District-wide curriculum review activities have five main goals:

1. A clearly-defined core curriculum in each subject area.
2. Recognition of the specific needs of special groups of students and instructional strategies to accommodate those needs so that all students can succeed in the core curriculum.
3. The identification or design of successful cross-curricular instructional practices, as appropriate.
4. An articulated curriculum among and between grade levels (scope and sequence).
5. Resources and policies supportive of the necessary ongoing staff development of teachers and administrators at the school site.

The following Curriculum Committees are part of the Instructional Advisory Council for 2006-2007:

Reading/English/Language/ELD Advisor: Kristi Hickman
Student Wellness/Physical Education: Eileen Mori
History/Social Science/Technology Advisor: John Drake
Math Advisor: Kristi White
Science Advisor: Anna Dreifus

Each Curriculum Committee is comprised of:

Principal Advisor
Chairperson/Leader
Two middle school teachers
Two intermediate teachers
Two primary teachers
One kindergarten teacher
One special education teacher
One teacher representing second language learners
One psychologist (ad hoc)
Two parents or community members
Subject area Curriculum Committees meet on a regularly scheduled basis and minutes are shared with all site network representatives.

The Instructional Advisory Council chaired by Mrs. Hempstead and comprised of Curriculum Committee Advisors, several teacher representatives, and parents meets monthly. The agenda will reflect current committee reports and additional pertinent information regarding instructional issues. Minutes of the IAC are disseminated to all administrative personnel and committee members.

IAC meetings for 2005-2006 will be held the third Monday of each month from 3:30-4:30 in the District Board Room

The meeting dates are:

March 20, 2006
April 17, 2006
