Pertussis (Whooping Cough) Alert

New Law Requires Immunization for 7th-12th Graders

We are asking parents/guardians to be aware of the potential severity of pertussis (Whooping Cough). For your information we are providing answers to Frequently Asked Questions regarding symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, and the spread of pertussis, along with information about pertussis vaccine. 

Tdap safely protects against 3 dangerous diseases: tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (called pertussis). Whooping cough has been increasing in the U.S. It continues to be widespread in California. For the 2011-12 school year only, children entering 7th-12th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot before starting school. For 2012-13 and beyond, only students entering 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap shot.

Children should visit their doctor or health care provider to get their shots. Children 18 years and younger who are uninsured or underinsured may qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program to get free or low cost immunization services. To find a provider near you call 1.877.243.8832.
