Sheila Blyth - Middle School Teacher of the Year 2009

Sheila Blyth represents all that is great about education. She takes great pride in her work and is passionate about educating children. Sheila has taught Physical Education in Ocean View for over 30 years, and throughout that time has been an integral mentor, teacher, and friend to countless students. Her lessons about physical fitness and life have impacted thousands of children.

Sheila is a champion for student health and fitness. She vigilantly coordinates her class time to incorporate both health-related classroom lessons and carefully-directed, hands-on physical fitness lessons. She is an inspiration to her students, encouraging each child to continually push the limits of their physical fitness to achieve new goals for themselves. She is a champion for involvement in sports, both in and out of school, working before and after school with individual athletes to improve their skill. For many years Sheila has coordinated Marine View Middle School’s Jump Rope for Heart, Hoops for Heart, and Walk-a-Thon programs with the American Heart Association. Sheila is a patient, kind, and loving educator who has, time after time, won the trust of even the most reluctant physical education student.

Sheila Blyth carries herself with a positive attitude at all times and is often seen “high-fiving” students in the halls and congratulating students on their recent accomplishment, both academic and athletic. Character education is extremely important to Sheila, and she incorporates the Marine View motto, “Do the Right Thing”, into her students’ daily experiences.

Sheila Blyth has been chosen to represent Ocean View School District for the 2009 Orange County Teacher of the Year competition.
