2007 API Report
Ocean View schools posted positive gains on California’s key measurement for determining academic growth, according to the data released today from the state’s 2007 report on school accountability. Students in grades 2 - 8 were tested in spring 2007 under the state’s STAR program. Nine schools improved on the Academic Performance Index (API), which has a numerical range scaled from 200 to 1000. The API has been the state’s key benchmark since 1999 to gauge public school improvement. Among Ocean View’s elementary schools seven achieved API scores above 800, the level at which a school is considered high-achieving.
Three elementaries, Lake View, Oak View and Westmont, all Title I schools, gained 25 points or more. Ocean View’s middle schools also showed significant gains, with Mesa View Middle School growing 20 points. Three middle schools posted API scores above 800.
Ocean View’s district-wide API score grew six points to 830 which far exceeds the state API score of 727.
Along with the API report, the state released information about school and district performance on the federal Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) component under the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) which began in 2003. On the AYP, 14 of 15 Ocean View schools met all federal requirements for the number of students achieving at or above proficiency, the percentage benchmark set by the NCLB law.
District wide Ocean View schools scored 61.3% proficient in language arts compared to the state score of 45.5%. In the area of math, the District scored 67.9% proficient compared to the state score of 48.5%.
