4. How do I become a teacher?

5. What do I need to do to become a substitute teacher in your District?
To teach in our District, you must have a teaching credential or an Emergency 30-day Substitute Teaching Permit. Fingerprints must be cleared by the Orange County Department of Education prior to employment.
6. How do I get an Emergency 30-Day Substitute Permit?
You must have a BA degree and have passed the California Basic Education Skills Test (CBEST). Call the Orange County Department of Education for information about the Emergency Substitute Teaching Permit and fingerprint clearance.
7. I am new to California. How do I apply for a California Teaching Credential?
You must contact the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for information.
8. How do I renew my credential?
You must apply for your renewal at least 6 months prior to your credential expiration date. Credentials must be renewed on the CTC website at www.ctc.ca.gov
9. How do I add a multiple subject to my existing single subject/standard secondary credential?
Based on California Education Code, Section 44255(e), teachers can obtain an additional teaching credential without completing the full professional preparation program for that credential. Please check the CTC website at www.ctc.ca.gov to see if you are a qualified applicant. (See Leaflet CL-621A)
10. How can I teach in a self contained classroom without obtaining a multiple subject credential?
Based on California Education Code, Section 44263: . . . allows the holder of a teaching credential, usually a General Secondary, Standard Secondary or Single Subject, to serve by Board resolution with teacher consent in a self contained classroom if the teacher has completed 60 semester hours of course work equally distributed among the following subjects: language studies, literature, mathematics, science, social science, history, humanities, the arts, physical education and human development.
11. How do I become a highly qualified teacher?
A teacher with a multiple subject credential must take the CSET - multiple subject test. A teacher with a single subject credential must take the CSET in the single subject area of your credential.

15. What is CBEST?
California requires that you must demonstrate proficiency in basic reading, writing and mathematics skills in English by passing the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST). You must take the CBEST if any of the following conditions apply to you:
• You are applying for a first teaching credential or service credential.
• You are applying for the issuance or renewal of an Emergency Permit.
If you have not taught during the prior 39 months, regardless of the credential you hold.
You are applying for admission to a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) approved teacher preparation program.
16. How many days do employees receive for jury duty?
Certificated and Classified employees will receive a paid leave of absence for the entire period of jury duty service.
