Governor's Proposed Budget Cuts
OV's Path to a Balanced Budget for 2008-09
Governor Schwarzenneger proposed drastic cuts to education in his January State Budget Proposal. He asked the state Legislature to suspend Proposition 98 which guarantees schools receive 40% from the State's general budget.
For Ocean View this translates into cutting $2.6 million from next year's 2008-09 budget, and an additional $3 million for the following year. Before any recommendations for reductions are presented to the Board of Trustees for comment and action, the District's Fiscal Planning Team will identify areas where reductions can occur without impacting our Core Program and high student achievement. A Core Principle of this process includes minimizing any impact to staff. All areas of our District budget are being analyzed and a freeze on spending has been implemented to increase fall-out money at the close of this fiscal year.
The Fiscal Planning Team is a group comprised of members of employee associations, principals, and district administrators. These stakeholders have met numerous times over the last two months to identify possible program suspensions.
The Board of Trustees is committed to a transparent and inclusive process. The Board will conduct study sessions to receive information and recommendations from the Superintendent. The study sessions will be announced on this website and are open to the public.
